Screening and diagnostic mammograms

A mammogram, or X-ray of your breast, is the best way to look for breast cancer. Mammograms serve two purposes:

  • Screening mammogram – Checks for breast cancer before you have signs or symptoms.
  • Diagnostic mammogram – Examines a concerning area after you notice a lump, pain or other symptoms that could indicate breast cancer, or if you have an irregular screening mammogram result.

Immediate mammogram results

Get the results of your screening mammogram right away – so you can leave your appointment with peace of mind or get prompt follow-up care. Immediate screening mammogram results are available when your test is completed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. ProHealth is the first and only health care organization in the area to offer immediate screening results.

3D mammograms

Trust your breast health to the first health care system in Wisconsin to use 3D digital mammography (breast tomosynthesis). With 3D mammography, your care team takes multiple X-rays of your breast and then uses a computer to create a 3D picture. Your doctor can then see your breast tissue in thin, detailed “slices.”

Benefits of 3D mammograms

Because 3D mammograms provide a clearer picture of your breast, you may benefit from:

  • Ability to detect breast cancer earlier — when it’s easier to treat
  • More accurate diagnosis
  • Fewer tests

Image-guided breast biopsies

If imaging tests show you might have breast cancer, you’ll need a biopsy. During a biopsy, your doctor removes a small sample of tissue from your breast to examine it more closely and confirm or rule out breast cancer. Whenever possible, your team uses an image-guided needle biopsy, so you’ll benefit from less pain and little to no scarring.

Types of image-guided breast biopsies

Your doctor will recommend the right type of biopsy for you based on your condition and preferences. Results are generally available within one or two days. Ask about:

  • MRI-guided core needle biopsy – Uses MRI and a hollow needle to find and remove a sample of cells.
  • Stereotactic core needle biopsy – Uses mammography and a hollow needle to find and remove a sample of cells.
  • Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy – Uses ultrasound and a hollow needle to find and remove a sample of cells.
