This exam is usually done by a pulmonologist (a physician specializing in treatment of the lungs). A small, flexible, tube is advanced through your nose into the trachea and lungs. The doctor is able to diagnose problems associated with cough, pneumonia and tumors, as well as chronic lung problems. Secretions and tissue (biopsy) may be collected for examination under the microscope.
