Prostate Wellness & Prevention

Be aware of your risks and know the signs to catch prostate cancer early

No cancer can be prevented. However, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing the disease or catch it early. Be aware of risk factors, watch for signs and symptoms of the disease, and talk with your doctor about screening.

Risk factors

The following factors may increase your risk of prostate cancer:

  • You are age 50 or older

  • You have a father, brother or son who has had prostate cancer

  • You are African-American. Prostate cancer occurs more often in African-American men than in white men.

  • Higher than normal levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Signs and symptoms

If you are showing signs or symptoms of prostate cancer, talk with your doctor immediately.

  • Weak or interrupted urine flow

  • Inability to urinate

  • Need to urinate frequently, especially at night

  • Blood in urine

  • Pain or burning when urinating

  • Continual pain in lower back, pelvis or upper thighs
